Far too many 'owned' pets find themselves 'homeless', simply because they didn't find their way home. Loving families are heartbroken with worry and loss.
Each year hundreds of pets, brought in as 'stray',  wait at  shelters for a home when they already have one. With shelters already overwhelmed, valuable space is being taken away from pets truly left 'homeless;.
Often times people don't know where to search for their missing pet. They may have contacted their nearest animal control or shelter, meanwhile their pet is sitting at a shelter further away. Sadly, some of these pets ultimately lose their lives.

Keeping Pets Out of Shelters

Picture
Imagine being far from home or possibly right next door, yet you are 'lost' and confused. The people you relied upon and the comfort only your home can bring is GONE.
This is a reality for far too many pets. Often times these pets are deemed 'strays'
.   Generally when someone finds a pet they automatically assume it is a stray. Meaning well, the pet is brought to an animal shelter. If the shelter is in the same town odds are the owner will look there first, but many towns don't have physical shelters. Or someone finding a pet may prefer a shelter a little further away and bring the pet there. It's not unheard of with so many of our shelters unable to take on more pets for a pet to be transported over an hour away.  Many owners only think to look for their pet at their nearest facility, reducing their odds of ever finding their pet. Meanwhile, their pet sits waiting to be found. Many of these pets are put up for adoption, for others being placed on 'death row' comes too soon.

Pet Theft on the Rise

Picture
Sad to think anyone wood exploit pets simply for their own personal gain.
Though, this is not a new concept, in the mid 1800's NYC offered a .50 bounty for each stray dog that was brought in. Ultimately this led to people stealing dogs right out of their own yards and worse from childrens' arms.
Though there is no longer a bounty for stray dogs, careless individuals have learned they can make money by "flipping" pets, the act of adopting or stealing pets to resell for a high profit.
dogs are still being 'snatched' right from parked cars or even their yards. Protect your dog, never leave it unattended.

Special Pets in Need of Homes

Since 2008 cat adoptions have been on a steady decline. Cats far out number dogs in our shelters and suffer a higher death rate.
As we strongly believe in providing pets with no-kill options, it is our goal to help place felines deemed less adoptable, those at most risk for euthanization.
While a dog  is more than happy to greet adopters: tung hanging, tail wagging our feline friends are a bit more recluse, feeling insecure around strangers they may be aloof, showing their worst side.
Please visit our 'special needs feline page' and consider giving a special kitty a forever home.

Star Princess came to us as a kitten limping her way into our hearts. Her front leg, bent in front of her, is a disability she has learned to overcome. Often times you will find her climbing up into the kitty tour. Though she was adopted into an amazing home, she was later returned when her caregiver suffered major medical issues.
